Though OE was a highly inflected language prepositions played an important role in connecting words in a sentence. It was due to the fact that they served not as mere connectives but expressed different meanings at the same time. As to their form the OE prepositions fall into 2 groups: primary: wiÞ (against), mid, of, to, æt and secondary: before, ætgædere (together). Most prepositions are polysemantic. The two most common meanings are those of place and time:
on Þæm lande (на тій землі)
On
on mor™enne (вранці)
Thus they have spatial and temporal meanings.
