I.
Palatalization of initial consonants. k, g, g(single or double) were palatalized under the influence of the neighbouring front vowels.
k > k ceap (bargain)
g > g sen™ean
g > j™ear (year)
Besides the initial combination [sk] sc irrespective of the following vowel was also palatalized: csīp (ship).
In the course of later development these palatal consonants turned into sibilants (шиплячі).
k > › g > G sc > S
The change was not reflected in spelling.
Assibilationdidn’t occur if front vowels were not original (before mutated vowels): cyn™ - king.
II. Voicing of fricatives (in voiced surrounding they became voiced).
fwif -wifan
sbōsm
Þ cweÞan (say)
III.
Rejection of consonants. hin the internal position was rejected.
mæ™den – mæden
IV. Metathesis(перестановка). The most often case of metathesis was:
a vowel + r > r + a vowel.
Þirda > Þridda (третій)
Þreo – three (hence in Mod.E three but third)
